“Never again” was a post-Holocaust vow that turned out to mean “never again for Jewish people, but concentration camps and starvation for Palestinians is fine.” Along with “never again” came the received idea that where the U.S. and its allies went wrong in preventing WW2 was appeasing Nazi Germany’s territorial ambitions in Europe.
Never mind that IBM, General Motors, and Ford would continue to do business with the Nazis even as the U.S. armed the UK to fight them. Never mind that imperial Japan was used as the cat’s claw to contain communist China before suddenly finding itself in an oil embargo enforced by Western powers, one that guaranteed the necessity of a military response. It was appeasing Hitler that caused everything!

Now we encounter reams of digital ink bemoaning the U.S. and UK appeasement of Hitler’s spiritual son, Netanyahu. The Biden administration never pressed him for a ceasefire despite lying repeatedly that they did (one failed candidate even claimed to be “working round the clock” for a ceasefire even while pounding the campaign trail). Thundering speeches are now heard from appeasing politicians riding the orange man bad wave to try and portray Democrats as the party that is tough on ally Israel. Uh huh.
Currently the U.S. is helping to bomb Yemen, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Somalia and of course Gaza. Also to sell hugely expensive Raytheon-made defensive systems which failed spectacularly this weekend as Yemen struck Ben Gurion airport with a hypersonic weapon creating a 25 meter deep crater and shutting down commercial flights. Today I saw news that a private U.S. company will be tasked with administering what can no longer accurately be described as humanitarian aid in a way that will tighten Israel’s control of population movement among starving Gazans. And the dunces in 47’s administration will continue to brag, gloat, and attempt to bully the Palestinian resistance — despite their own weakness.
Who’s appeasing whom? If General Dynamics continues to get contracts for Aegis destroyers that fail to protect the Zionist land grab I would argue it is GD war profiteers that are being appeased. If Raytheon (aka RTX) continues posting robust sales growth and profits despite its missile interceptor systems failing miserably on May 4, U.S. taxpayers will soothe their dismay with new contracts. And this will happen whether or not the consent of the governed is obtained.
A picture worth 1,000 words: replace Rep. Mike Michaud with Jared Golden but little else has changed since Maine’s congressional delegation pledged allegiance to General Dynamics in 2014 as another nuclear-capable warship was "christened" in Bath.
The donor class is the only class that gets meaningful representation here in late stage capitalism. War profiteers have led the world to war many times in the past. Let’s stop appeasing them and maybe, just maybe, nip WW3 in the bud.
