I don't think our only choices are putting all our eggs in the electoral strategy basket or washing our hands of electoral politics completely (sorry, lots of metaphors there...). Personally, I will vote for Graham Platner because of his stance on some issues I see as crucial (and because, even though he's running as a Dem, he is not in the pocket of the Dem party). That certainly doesn't mean I see him as a hero, and neither does it mean that I see electoral strategy as the best or onlyl way to make social change.
Of course we have way more than two choices. And also I know that you, Abby, never rest from working for social change in a wide variety of ways! Unfortunately there are lots of people putting immense energy into supporting candidates in lieu of more effective political engagement. And constantly proselytizing others to do the same.
I'm excited to learn that you have just re-read Mao's ON CONTRADICTION and recognizing the importance of locating the principal contradiction. YES, it is between imperialism and the mass of people. But there are secondary and tertiary contradictions as well, including among the people. He has another fine essay I recommend which I took to heart back in the sixties when read it. it is ON THE CORRECT HANDLING OF CONTRADICTIONS AMONG THE PEOPLE. In it he talks about two types of such, "antagonistic contradictions" those between ourselves and enemy personnel which ultimately requite some kind of force to resolve) and "non-antagonistic contradictions" (which ought to be resolved using reason, persuasion and setting an example) This failure to understand this distinction is exactly what was wrong with Stalin.
